LONDON — It seems that the drug industry is becoming increasingly concerned about the possibility of a drug-safety scare.
The United Kingdom has been warned that the use of erectile dysfunction drugs could lead to an increased risk of death in men taking them.
The risks could be particularly high when Viagra and other ED medications are prescribed for impotence, according to the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
“We are concerned about the potential risks,” said James Barder, director of the MHRA’s division at the agency.
He said Viagra users were not only more likely to suffer side effects from the medication, but they were also at higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s, seizures and other diseases.
The drug, sildenafil, was approved in Britain for erectile dysfunction in 1998, but only in males aged between 18 and 55 years old.
However, men who take the drug for impotence may also be at higher risk of developing a stroke, according to the MHRA.
The drug also contains sildenafil, a medicine that works by increasing blood flow to the penis.
Viagra has been linked to the death of a man who died from the effects of the drug.
In 2016 the MHRA said that it was worried that the drug could be fatal to an unborn child, a baby with the condition known as Down’s syndrome, and that the risk may increase with age.
The MHRA has not released its warnings about the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
